Centering Survivors: Family Services of Greater Vancouver Recognizes Victims and Survivors of Crime Week

Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) is recognizing Victims and Survivors of Crime Week (May 10-16, 2026) by spotlighting its free Victim Support Services and Trauma Counselling programs. For more than 40 years, FSGV has walked alongside survivors, offering care, guidance, and a safe path forward. Year-round, FSGV is with survivors, every step of the way.

This Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, spokespeople from FSGV are available to discuss:

  • Free, accessible programs for victims and survivors

  • How support services help disrupt cycles of violence and restore survivors’ sense of autonomy and power, and the importance of this

  • What trauma-informed, client-led, and survivor-centred care looks like in practice

  • Supports for children, youth, and families following traumatic experiences

  • Ways to identify and support victims of human trafficking

  • The role of community-based and police-based victim and survivor services 

When: May 10-16, 2026

Why: Led by the Department of Justice Canada, Victims and Survivors of Crime Week draws national attention to the experiences of those impacted by crime, and the resources available to support them. FSGV continues to expand access to compassionate, evidence-based care across Vancouver, New Westminster, Richmond, and Burnaby, ensuring victims and survivors can access support that meets them where they are.

Programs at a Glance:

Victim Support Services

Assists individuals affected by elder abuse, intimate partner violence, exploitation, and family violence. Services include:

  • Emotional support and safety planning

  • Guidance through the criminal justice system

  • Developing a network of support

  • Connections to community-based resources and services

Trauma Counselling

Assists children, youth, adults, and seniors who have experienced trauma, including violence, abuse, and exploitation. Services include:

  • Age-appropriate, therapeutic support 

  • Building resilience and coping strategies

  • Support for reclaiming independence and a sense of stability

FSGV’s approach is grounded in evidence-based, client-led care that recognizes survivors as the experts in their own experience. The focus extends beyond immediate safety, supporting individuals as they rebuild confidence and agency. 

Impact:

  • On average, FSGV works with each victim of violence for 4 years

  • In 2025, FSGV walked along survivors for 15,000 hours.

  • FSGV supported more than 1,000+ survivors of high-risk violence in 2025.

  • 43% of trauma counselling clients were under the age of 25 in 2025.
